Do Not Leave The Slip Until The Gate
Yellow slip notes for car owners sound like a tiny detail until collection day arrives. Then the logbook is on the kitchen table, the driver is waiting, and nobody is quite sure which section should be kept. That is avoidable.
Before the car leaves, open the V5C and find the yellow motor trade section. GOV.UK scrapping guidance says that when scrapping without keeping parts, the vehicle logbook is given to the authorised treatment facility while the yellow motor trade section is kept, and DVLA must be told.
Match The Slip To The Vehicle
Check the registration, make and model before filling anything in. This matters where several old cars, vans or trailers have been stored together. A V5C from the wrong vehicle can sit in the same drawer for years, especially in farmhouses, workshops and family homes.
If the vehicle is being collected from a different address from the keeper address, keep that detail in your notes. The yellow section is part of the keeper trail, but the collection record should also show where the car actually left from.
Take your time. A neat, boring record is better than a rushed one.
Keep Your Part Safe
Once the relevant section is completed, keep your retained part with the receipt, quote, payment reference and any DVLA confirmation. Do not hand every scrap of paper to the driver just because it feels easier.
If you take a photo, make sure it is readable. A blurred image of a half-filled form is not much help later. Store the photo where you will find it, not buried among unrelated car pictures.
The retained section is not the whole job, but it supports the record of what happened.
If The V5C Is Missing
A missing V5C does not mean you should invent details. Tell the buyer early and ask what identification and keeper information they need. Keep the collection receipt and payment record especially clear.
Do not assume that a missing logbook removes the need to tell DVLA or close the vehicle record correctly. It simply means the route may need more care. Check current official guidance if you are unsure how to proceed.
This is common with cars that have been standing for years, changed hands within a family, or moved from one rural property to another.
Avoid Old Advice
V5C layouts and processes can change over time. Someone may remember a previous section number or an older paper form. Use the wording and instructions on the current V5C and GOV.UK guidance rather than relying on pub-chat advice from years ago.
That is especially sensible if the car has a private plate, an old keeper address or a SORN history. One paperwork issue often exposes another.
File The Slip With The Whole Job
After collection, put the yellow slip record beside the DVLA confirmation, receipt, collection time, address and payment details. If a Certificate of Destruction is later issued, keep that in the same place.
Yellow slip notes for car owners are not complicated. They are just one of the small checks that make a scrap car handover feel properly finished instead of half remembered.
