Address Mismatches Are Common
Keeper address changes before disposal are easy to overlook because the car itself is usually the urgent problem. It may be blocking a yard, sitting beside a garage, or parked on a relative's land outside Garstang. The logbook can feel like admin for later.
That is risky. The address on the V5C may be where DVLA correspondence or a tax refund bank transfer is directed. If the keeper has moved, or the vehicle has been stored away from the registered address for months, the paperwork deserves attention before the car goes.
Compare Three Addresses
There are often three addresses in play: the address on the V5C, the keeper's current address, and the place where the vehicle is being collected. They may all be the same. If they are not, write each one down and decide what it means for the record.
A car kept on private land near a workshop might still be registered to a home address. A car inherited from a relative may still show the old house. A small business vehicle may be stored at a yard but registered to an office.
Those situations do not automatically stop disposal, but they should not be hidden. Clear notes make the handover easier to explain later.
Think About Tax And DVLA Contact
GOV.UK says vehicle tax is cancelled when DVLA is told the vehicle has been sold, transferred, taken off the road, written off, scrapped, stolen, exported or made tax-exempt. Refunds are for full remaining months and are calculated from the date DVLA receives the information.
The refund bank transfer is sent to the name and address on the vehicle log book. That is why an old V5C address can cause nuisance after a car has already gone. If you know the logbook address is wrong, do not discover it only when money or letters fail to arrive.
Check current DVLA guidance before choosing the right route for an address correction or disposal notification.
Keep The Collection Address Clear
The collection address matters for the service record even when it is not the keeper address. Give the exact entrance, farm name, yard name or lane instruction. Rural postcodes can point to the wrong gateway, especially where several properties share a track.
If the vehicle is collected from land belonging to someone else, add a note that they agreed to the removal. It is a small detail, but it keeps the job file tidy.
Photos can help too. A picture of the car in position, plus a receipt showing the registration and collection date, is often enough to remind everyone what happened.
Do Not Rush A Private Plate Or Family Transfer
Address problems sometimes appear alongside private plate plans or family handovers. If the keeper wants to retain a registration number, or a relative is arranging disposal, handle that before the vehicle is scrapped. Once the car is destroyed, missed paperwork can become much harder to fix.
The same applies to old insurance or finance records. If the keeper details are unclear, slow down and make the file understandable.
Close The Loop After Handover
After collection, save the DVLA confirmation, retained V5C section, receipt and payment reference with your address notes. If the car was collected from a place different from the logbook address, leave that explanation in the same folder.
Keeper address changes before disposal are rarely exciting. They are simply one of those quiet checks that stop an old car from causing new admin later.
